Building a Realistic Digital Twin of the City of Terre Haute, IN., for Flood Simulation As climate change intensifies, cities worldwide are seeking innovative solutions to enhance their resilience against natural disasters. In Terre Haute, Indiana, we embarked on a pioneering project to develop a highly detailed digital twin of the city, enabling advanced flood simulations to aid in urban planning and disaster preparedness.. The foundation of our project was the creation of a comprehensive 3D digital twin of Terre Haute. Utilizing high-resolution aerial imagery, LiDAR scans, and existing GIS data, we constructed an accurate virtual representation of the city's infrastructure, including buildings, roads, and natural features. This digital model serves as a dynamic platform for analyzing various urban scenarios. With the digital twin in place, we integrated hydrological data to simulate flood events. By inputting historical rainfall records, river flow data, and topographical information, we modeled potential flood scenarios to assess their impact on different parts of the city. These simulations help identify vulnerable areas and inform mitigation strategies. To provide stakeholders with an immersive understanding of potential flood impacts, we developed a virtual reality (VR) experience based on our simulations. This VR visualization allows users to explore flood scenarios interactively, offering a compelling tool for community engagement and decision-making. The integration of a digital twin with flood simulation capabilities offers Terre Haute a powerful tool for proactive urban planning. By visualizing potential disasters before they occur, city officials can implement effective strategies to protect residents and infrastructure. This approach sets a precedent for other municipalities aiming to enhance their disaster resilience through technology.
